“A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

I thought the story would be frightening, but when I started reading I realised that it was more than a scary story! I empathized with the main character, Conor, who is going through a really difficult time because his mum has cancer and the chemotherapy isn’t working. At school, he is treated as though he has the illness and this makes him frustrated – he wants to be treated like everyone else.

The characters are very well developed and the writing allows you to imagine exactly what is being described. There are some very dramatic moments and the writer creates tension.

The novel teaches us that it is important to be truthful and express your feelings honestly. You are taken on a journey of discovery by the monster and you will be shocked by the ending!
