This year, the Student Ambassadors for Literacy have devised some brilliant ways of promoting literacy and creativity here at the school. One of these ideas was a creative writing competition.

Students were given the challenge of writing a short story in response to visual stimulus. They had freedom to choose the subject matter and themes as long as there was some connection to the pictures provided by one of our judges (and an incredibly talented writer herself), Lucía P., from Year 11D.

After shortlisting the entries, we had the difficult task of selecting just one winner from key stage 3 and one from key stages 4 and 5. We were taken on some incredible imaginative journeys, from the exciting and breathless tale created by Curro M., from Year 11A, to the dramatic extract from the diary of navigator Jason Wild (created by Hugo B. from Year 9B). Miranda M., from Year 11D, chilled us with her child’s narrative inspired by the witch trials and demonstrated the ability to craft a gripping story.

After some deliberation, however, and the guidance of our second judge, Nicolas B., from Year 11D, we decided that  Maria A., from Year 8A, and Madeleine A., from Year 11D, deserved the prize. Maria’s talent and fluency belies her age; after reading her story ‘Destiny’ we felt as though we had been tossed and beaten by the waves that she describes so eloquently! In ‘Waging War’, Madi took a different approach, drawing on mythology for her powerful tale of conflict and courage. I had goosebumps as I read the last line.

I have no doubt that we will see these talented writers in print one day. We hope that you enjoy their stories as much as we did.
