“American Rust” by Philipp Meyer

The book is set in post-industrial Pittsburgh and explores the impact of globalisation on small working communities.

The story follows the fortunes of two young protagonists: Isaac English, a young, academically gifted boy who lost his mother and lives with his disabled father, and Billy Poe, a former high school football champion whose life after school has gone nowhere. The two are good friends and when Isaac decides to leave town to start a new life in California a shocking event changes their lives and tests the limits of their friendship.

The book explores the strain that worklessness and poverty puts on friendships and communities. Running across the story is a deeper exploration of the impact of globalisation on working people in America and Meyer exposes the limits of the ´American Dream´ and how individuals are expected to pull themselves up out of poverty.

The book is suitable for Year 10 onwards.
