In these times of confinement, we must be prepared to face the conflicts that arise with our children at one point or another, as they are also trying to adapt to this new situation without having the self-control strategies that an adult is supposed to have.

This new situation forces us to be full-time parents. We have gone from being able to be with them, guiding and accompanying them in their activities, to being parents twenty-four hours a day, and also teachers. This is quite a challenge for parents, and also for children, who find themselves in a situation that, in the case of the little ones, they barely understand.

As adults and parents, we are experiencing a huge strain on self-control. To preserve it, we would like to share with you some simple but necessary guidelines:

1- Let’s not make the mistake of believing that we have to solve everything for them, from explaining what they don’t understand about homework, to trying to entertain them so that they never get bored. We should not feel overwhelmed by their demands, as boredom can be a great creativity booster.

2-Limits are still necessary, but with patience and flexibility. We cannot expect them to easily stick to routines they are not familiar with (order, cleanliness, homework, all at once). Try to explain clearly what we want them to do and congratulate them when they do it.

3- In the face of anger in all its forms (tantrums, screaming, slamming doors, etc.) we don’t need to be peacemakers all the time. Children have the right to be angry at this situation. We should only ask them to not hurt others or themselves. They may stay in their room and practice some relaxation exercises until they calm down. If there are arguments among siblings, try to let them figure it out between them. We should not intervene in everything that is going on.

4- Try not to punish them, but to set out the logical consequences of their actions. Right now our discipline strategies are more limited, and they will surely understand better the consequences than the punishment.

5- Find a space where each of you can be alone and relax doing whatever you want or simply addressing your emotions.

6- Fear is contagious and as parents we currently face all kinds of uncertainties related to health, money, etc., that make us feel anxious or even afraid. We all have the right to express our emotions, but we must exercise our self-control when it comes to negative feelings, so as not to transmit them to our children. Before starting an argument, talk.

7- Let’s try to live the moment without anticipating and thinking about when all this is going to end. That day will come, but in the meantime, we should try to value the positive side that all crises have.

8- This situation is a test for us all, so something that will undoubtedly help us is to establish small daily goals and try to achieve them. This will give us the strength and energy to keep the self-control that we need to handle daily conflicts.
