Esta experta en Inteligencia Artificial dio una conferencia en la que explicó cómo la IA va a transformar el sector educativo en los próximos años y cómo podrá ayudar al profesorado y alumnado de Caxton College.

“Los profesores sueñan con dar clases de manera personalizada a sus alumnos. También los padres quieren que sus hijos reciban una enseñanza individualizada. Pero con el sistema educativo actual es muy complicado conseguirlo. El principal problema es que los profesores dedican el 60% de su tiempo a tareas administrativas. Las plataformas educativas con IA eliminan ese trabajo a los docentes para que pueda dedicar más tiempo al alumno. De este modo, la enseñanza es más personalizada, más humana y los estudiantes progresan más”, asegura la fundadora y CEO de Century Tech, institución inglesa destinada a mejorar el sistema educativo a través de la IA que ya trabaja con centros de enseñanza de 65 países.

Con esta afirmación, Lakhani, quien forma parte del Consejo de Inteligencia Artificial del Reino Unido, rompe uno de los prejuicios más extendidos entre la población que consiste en que la IA va a “eliminar” puestos de trabajo para dejar la enseñanza en manos de las máquinas. Escuchándola, más bien parece que el efecto es justamente el contrario ya que la IA puede humanizar el proceso de aprendizaje. “En las clases tenemos que potenciar la HI (Inteligencia Humana) apoyándonos en la IA para que el profesor pueda dedicar más tiempo a los contenidos educativos. La clave está en quitarle todas aquellas tareas innecesarias que la IA puede hacer de manera rápida automatizada. Es importante invertir en los profesores”, confirma esta emprendedora inglesa, distinguida por la Orden del Imperio Británico -OBE-, un alto reconocimiento que solo reciben aquellas personas que destacan por una labor profesional que contribuye a mejorar la sociedad en el ámbito de las ciencias, las artes o la cooperación.

Plataformas educativas con Inteligencia Artificial

Son muchos los desafíos a los que se enfrenta el sistema educativo español con una cifra de abandono escolar que está todavía en un 16%. “Según nuestros datos, los colegios que usaron IA en sus aulas mejoraron los resultados entre el 22%-30%. La clave de esta mejora está en que la eficacia del aprendizaje es mayor puesto que cada alumno piensa que la lección ha sido hecha a medida para él”.

Estas plataformas, que incorporan machine learning, son capaces de rastrear el conocimiento del alumno, sus habilidades, sus fallos, cómo se siente cuando está aprendiendo, si está frustrado, si está molesto, sus preferencias… “esto es así porque la IA trabaja de la mano de la neurociencia para ayudar a tener un conocimiento pormenorizado de cómo aprendemos. Este detalle es muy importante porque nos ayuda a analizar y a saber cómo estudia cada alumno. La IA maneja muchos datos que nos dan información sobre cómo los estudiantes se comportan. De ese modo podemos ofrecerles una educación mejor y más precisa”. Esta plataforma, continúa Lakhani, “no predice la nota que tendrá un alumno al final de curso, pero sí nos advertirá muy pronto dónde el alumno tiene problemas para que el profesor pueda intervenir a tiempo. Sin estas métricas podría ser tarde cuando el profesor se diera cuenta de que el alumno va mal”.

El colegio ha sido pionero en la Comunidad Valenciana en incorporar un proyecto piloto de IA en las aulas de sus dos últimos cursos de Primaria y en todo el ciclo de Secundaria. Es pronto para evaluar los resultados, pero por el momento, tanto alumnos como profesores están abordando este nuevo reto con entusiasmo y una alta predisposición. Los alumnos pueden conectarse y completar el trabajo que les ha sido sugerido por la propia plataforma, lo que les permite tomar el control de su propio aprendizaje y “al profesor le proporciona información en tiempo real sobre qué alumnos están progresando adecuadamente, quiénes pueden ampliar su potencial y quiénes necesitan esforzarse más”, concluye Lakhani.

“The dream of every teacher is to be able to differentiate for each pupil. Parents also want their children to receive a personalised education. But with the current educational system it’s very difficult to achieve this. The main problem is that teachers dedicate around 60% of their time to administrative work. AI educational platforms eliminate this so that teachers can spend more time on their students. This makes learning more individualised and personal, and students progress more quickly”, said the founder CEO of Century Tech, a British institution whose aim is to improve education through AI and already works with schools in 65 countries.

With this affirmation, Ms Lakhani, who is a member of the UK’s AI Council, negates one of the more common misconceptions about AI, which is that it will ‘eliminate’ teaching jobs and leave teaching up to machines. But from what she says, it seems that the effect will be precisely the opposite: that AI will make the learning process more human. “In lessons we have to promote HI (Human Intelligence) with the help of AI so that the teacher can spend more time teaching. The key is to take away all the unnecessary tasks that AI can do quickly. It’s essential to invest in teachers”, confirmed this British entrepreneur who is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contributions to improving society.

Educational Platforms with Artificial Intelligence

There are many challenges facing the Spanish educational system, which currently has a dropout rate of 16%. “According to our data, schools using AI in their classrooms improved their results by 22% to 30%. The key to this improvement was in the increased efficiency of learning because pupils perceive that lessons have been tailor-made for them”.

These platforms, which incorporate machine learning, can track the students’ knowledge, abilities and mistakes, how they feel whilst learning, if they feel frustrated or annoyed, or their preferences. “This is because AI works with the neuroscience in order to gain detailed information about how we learn. This detail is very important because it helps us to analyse and understand how each pupil studies. AI can take into account a lot of different data about how students behave, which allows us to provide a better and more precise education for them”. The platform, Ms Lakhani said, “doesn’t predict what grade a student will have at the end of the year, but will let us know well in advance if the pupil has any problems so that the teacher can intervene. Without this information, it could be too late when the teacher realises that a student isn’t doing well”.

Artificial Intelligence at Caxton College

The school has been a pioneer in the Valencian Community in implementing an AI pilot project in classrooms for the last two years of Primary education and throughout Secondary. It’s too early to evaluate results, but currently both students and teachers are taking on this new challenge with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Students can connect and complete work recommended by the platform, which allows them to take control of their own learning. “The teacher receives real time information about which students are progressing as expected, who needs stretch and who needs to make more effort”, said Ms Lakhani.
