De Ms Eve Waite, Coordinadora de Literacy en Secundaria

En general la alfabetización se suele considerar como algo que tiene que ver con leer y escribir, pero en realidad este concepto es mucho más amplio ya que incluye la capacidad de expresar nuestras opiniones, la resolución de problemas y toma de decisiones basadas en el lenguaje y el conocimiento que adquirimos.

Con motivo de la IX Campaña Literaria Anual que este año ponemos en marcha en el colegio entre el 2 de marzo y el 21 de abril, me gustaría explicar mi papel como Coordinadora de Alfabetización (Literacy) en Secundaria.

Quizás la parte más visible sea el trabajo que hago con nuestro equipo del Parlamento Europeo de la Juventud (EYP) en el que preparo al alumnado de Bachillerato a competir en torneos de debate. Hace un par de meses, estudiantes de Year 10 y 11 asistieron a conferencias, siguiendo el Modelo de las Naciones Unidas, donde representaban a un país y debatían sobre temas globales. También dirijo un club de debate para estudiantes de Key Stage 4 y 5 en el que se trabajan habilidades como investigar de manera efectiva, argumentar con convicción y expresar ideas intelectuales que les servirán para prepararse de cara a su futuro fuera de Caxton College.

Así mismo, dirijo el periódico escolar, Caxton Times, en el que los estudiantes realizan tareas como editores, subeditores, periodistas y fotógrafos. Es una de mis tareas preferidas ya que me permite observar cómo nuestros estudiantes se expresan por escrito. Los textos que realizan son de todo tipo y van desde la escritura creativa hasta temas de actualidad o reseñas de libros e incluso un cómic interno. Nuestro próximo proyecto será con Mr Robleh: tenemos muchas ganas de comenzar un novedoso podcast de Caxton.

Por último, mi trabajo se traslada a todos los departamentos de Secundaria con el objetivo de brindar una variedad de oportunidades a todo el plan de estudios para que nuestro alumnado pueda leer y escribir con confianza y disfrute al expresar sus opiniones y compartir su pensamiento de una manera crítica.

People often define literacy as having something to do with reading and writing, but it actually means so much more than that: it’s about being able to express our opinions, solve problems and make decisions based on the language and knowledge we acquire.

On the occasion of our 9th Annual Literacy Campaign at school this year, which will take place from 2 March to 21 April, I would like to explain my role as Caxton College’s Literacy Coordinator in Secondary.

Perhaps the most visible part of my role is the work I do with our Sixth Form European Youth Parliament (EYP) team to prepare them for debate competitions. More recently, I’ve got our younger students from Year 10 and Year 11 involved in Model United Nations conferences whereby students represent a country and debate exciting global issues. I also run a debate club for Key Stage 4 and 5. Being able to research effectively, argue compellingly and challenge intellectual ideas are some of the most crucial skills that our students can learn in order to prepare themselves for life outside of our Caxton community.

I run the school newspaper, the Caxton Times, and students get involved as editors, sub-editors, journalists and photographers. I love this part of my role as it enables our students to really express themselves. It’s such a diverse publication, with a creative writing section, current affairs, books reviews and even an in-house comic. We can’t wait to get started on our next project with Mr Robleh, which will be a Caxton podcast.

I do a lot of work behind the scenes, too. One of our aims in Secondary is to provide a range of literacy opportunities across the curriculum for our students so that they can read and write both with confidence and for pleasure, speak their opinions articulately and think critically about the world around them.
