Good Reasons for Running the London Marathon / Buenos motivos para participar en la maratón de Londres

by Lisa Rhodes, Teacher in Primary

Finding the words to describe my experience at the London Marathon is proving more challenging than the 42.2km it took to run it!  It was an unbelievable experience that exemplified the kindness of strangers and the power of the human spirit, and one that I will truly treasure forever. Over 53 000 people took to the streets of London this year, a record number of participants since the marathon started 45 years ago.

Voluntary Work in Sri Lanka with Special Needs Children / Voluntariado en Sri Lanka con niños con necesidades especiales

by Julie Cox, Teacher in Primary

Sri Lanka is a country that is very dear to my heart. Back in 2016 I took an unpaid sabbatical from my job in the UK to give voluntary service for children with special needs and disabilities in Sri Lanka. I was a founding director of an NGO to support children with special needs and disabilities and we collaborated with other foundations in Sri Lanka and with the health department. I am passionate about supporting children with vulnerabilities, especially children who are unable to attend their local schools and in most cases don’t receive any therapies, and their families who face many difficulties.

Circular History: Secondary Trip to Berlin / Historia circular: Viaje de Secundaria a Berlín

By Carlos B, Year 11 student

Eighty years ago, my great-grandmother found herself and her young family in Berlin at the height of the Second World War. The British had been bombing the capital of Nazi Germany since their first daring raid against the capital of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich in August 1940, and in 1943 a massive raid by Royal Air Force bombers caused the virtual destruction of one of the most iconic landmarks in Berlin, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. This neo-Romanesque church was gutted by fire bombs, and the spire partly collapsed. My great-grandmother had a photograph taken in front of this landmark in the summer of 1944, just before she fled Berlin for Spain with my Spanish great-grandfather and baby grandmother. This photograph has been in our family ever since, and stands as a testament to our connection with an important moment in history.

Celebrating Earth Hour: Caxton College Shines a Light on Environmental Awareness / Celebración de la Hora del Planeta: Caxton College ilumina la conciencia medioambiental

By Ms Carla Robleh, Sustainability Coordinator in Primary

In the spirit of fostering global consciousness and making a tangible impact on our planet’s health, Caxton College proudly participated in the annual Earth Hour initiative. Earth Hour, a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30pm. This symbolic gesture not only highlights our collective power to combat climate change but also serves as a poignant reminder of our responsibility towards Earth’s preservation and the urgent need to act for its future. This year the WWF wants to make it ‘The Biggest Hour for the Planet’ by getting everyone to use the hour to engage in positive actions for our shared home.
